Bangers 13,697 Posted June 1 Only the five line up but that doesn't make such a competitive Group 1 race any less of a puzzle. Not much went right for the main selection in last years Derby but some compensation was had when he was sent over the water to Curragh a few weeks later and won the Irish Derby in good fashion, it was a tad unfair that Rob Hornby didn't get the ride for the Irish Derby and probably even more of an insult connections stayed with Colin Keane in the King George VI & Queen Lizzie ''Ascot'' - he just didn't look the same horse that day finishing 5th but he still ran a good enough race in the Arc in Paris with once Rob Hornby getting the leg up, he finished 6th at Paris and his season was now possibly taking it's toll on him with trainer Ralph Beckett giving him a well earned rest. I've never been a massive fan of Meydan but still watched the race replay and it was nice to see how well he ran behind that freak Equinox, SIR Ryan Moore was up back in March and did have a good spin but it was clear a good way from he was never beating the Japanese Colt, IMO the Ralph Beckett trained horse still ran with full credit and IF he shows up anything like that back at Epsom when he was an unlucky 3rd he surely must go close. Rob Hornby gets the leg up again and I for one would love to see him put last years unlucky run in the Derby right and silence a few of critics, last years Derby result was just a bit unfortunate and we'll never know if he'd have beat Desert Crown but it would just be nice seeing the horse and Rob get some justice back on the same course, some just deserts. The Danger Realistically the other four are all live dangers BUT the money keeps pouring in on this German colt, he was over 20/1 with most firms a short while back and I got the heads up from a pal who's in the industry in Gibraltar and he said they've seen some very big bets for this German raider, I've took out some insurance on him and it will be very interesting to see what kind of race he runs, it's just such a tricky race but my heart still feels last years Derby 3rd is the main horse in this small field. Ive seen Emily upjohn race live and I didn't think that she was good enough to win this , even with Frankie up. It seems a wide open race and one to watch for me . O'Brien is a master poker player with his horses and I've backed Point Lonsdale in the past, however the colt has only won once on UK soil that being at Royal Ascot when I backed him, he's also never been over today's trip. Tuesday Only just beat Emily Upjohn in last years Oaks here at Epsom and have heard O'Brien speak of a few excuses when Tuesday ran in the Irish Derby BUT Westover destroyed that field at Curragh in the Irish Derby. IF the Westover that ran in last years Derby shows up, OR the Westover that Won the Irish Derby OR the Westover that was 2nd at Meydan to Equinox shows up - He Wins this pretty comfortably. A big positive for me is Rob Hornby getting the ride back and a much smaller field than last years UK Derby, Rob was very disappointed in himself in last years Epsom Derby, Ralph Beckett and connections are giving him another chance 1 year later, I'm predicting Rob making sure of this one. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
