It is relation to my career and before people think why is this guy asking a gambling forum for career advice I will add I think there are lots of people from diverse backgrounds on here who could offer me advice my immediate friends could not from an unbiased perspective. Basically I am currently employed by the NHS carrying out covid testing on a fixed term contract. I have recently been through a very rigorous application process for a position in a biotech which I think is going places. I have been offered this position which is nigh on my dream job but...... I told my boss at the hospital about all of this and he essentially said he wanted to keep me for a really interesting position albeit on poor wages. My dilemma is I enjoy knowing I am helping people in the NHS and would love to say but the wages are way way less and the attitude of some staff is hard to deal with. philinvicta Posted July 20, 2021 Share Posted July 20, 2021 (edited) At the end of the day you are unlikely to get much joy from "doing your duty and helping" as you are likely to get very little thanks for the sacrifice in the long term. You only have to look at the huge one per cent NHS staff where originally offered as a pay rise. Take the money and improve your own life. If you make a lot of money and get comfortable you can always "help out" later but I doubt you will last long as you will realise how unappreciated it is in the end. Go for the job that is going to make you the happiest; it sounds selfish but you have to make the decision that will make you happier and not worry about the sense of duty that you might be feeling. I had a sense of duty when I joined the army - i was doing well in my career and was on the fast track to get to my dream job and would have happily stayed in for the full term. I had an accident and ended up with severe damage to my ankles and knee; the response from the army? They dropped me so quick i was literally sat at home after a couple of days having being discharged. Whole potential career gone up in smoke At this point I realised that my duty is to myself - I work for who i feel will make me the happiest (it's not always about money, it's about the work life balance). In my current role I am quite specialised - I could easily get more money elsewhere but I have a work from home permanent contract (with flexi time) and a decent car allowance. More importantly I am happy. I get to work from home and see my kid grow up. Also you have to take into account the NHS may not be the same as it is now in a few years (if it's still around) and the pay rises/work life balance is bad. This is going to sound possibly harsh mate - but you are not responsible for saving the world. You are responsible for supporting your family and making sure that you can provide the best for them (and that means being happy at work). You are not abandoning anyone - can the people you work with honestly say that if they were offered their dream job, or won the euromillions tonight that they would carry on doing what they are doing? COVID will be around for a very long time (possibly longer than my lifetime) and there will be many experts/decent people who will work on different projects to help control and understand the virus better. Unfortunatley people die everyday and you can't live your life conflicted of what might/might not happen - that can be a very dangerous mindset to start to get mate as you end up feeling guilty for the people you don't save. End of the day, you have to do whats right for you. Some people have different processes for it (writing lists/pros/cons/taking some time away to reflect). Ultimatley it's your decision. Look at it from a different angle - what would happen if you got hit by a bus on the way home tonight? The fight against COVID still goes on, and people at work will probably say its a shame but the world keeps turning. As COVID will still be around in the future, you could take your dream job and realise you hate it, but if you have left on good terms go back to the NHS later down the road. I know the simple answer is to leave the NHS and go to the interesting job that has a much better wage and many other benefits yet I know I will feel like a sell out and piece of shit when things get bad in the winter. If it's something you have always wanted to do then go for it. Biotech is big business and will be around much longer than COVID. The winter is going to be extremley harsh this year - but look at all the people who float the rules, dont self-isolate when they are supposed to etc. Your fighting a loosing battle and NHS is going to get hammered when the real COVID bill starts to take hold. There really is no need to feel like a sell out if you take the biotech job - it's something you wanted to do and have worked hard for so don't ever feel guilty for that Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I work in a nursing home and all the staffs get tests every week and the swabs are sent to different testing centres all the time ... I am sure there are lot of testing centres across the UK .
