New Gambling Regulations - UK

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I'm a new member here, so please go easy 🙂

Yesterday, a consultation on the UK's gambling laws was completed and the review will likely result in massive changes to online gambling with all bookmakers and casinos being told they need to comply by the end of October.

The most significant changes that I can see are:

- Affordability checks: These are already in place with most firms to some degree or another, but it looks like it's going to become very strict. In October of last year, in anticipation of these changes, I was asked by an online operator to provide 6 months bank statements, payslips and my P60. This is a very high requirement and I don't expect it to be the norm but I would expect bank statements to be an absolute minimum going forward.

- Deposit limits: Right now, we can set deposit limits for our accounts, but going forward it looks like these may be imposed by the operator themselves based on your affordability check. Trying to deposit more than even £100 might be tough going forward.

- Stake limits: This is a big one and it will be interesting to see how it is implemented. I think we all know slot games will be affected in a big way with it being very likely that £1 is the max stake per spin. On top of that, the frequency of spins will likely slow down. But will it effect things like blackjack & roulette? Will it also have an affect on live wheel based games like Monopoly & Crazy Time? If so, those games will essentially die for UK operators. I think sports betting will be largely unaffected but who knows.

So I just wanted to hear what people's opinions were on this? Is gambling online in the UK going to be viable even for relatively low stake punters?

I see that Entain are one group that are trying to get a head start on this: https://www.ft.com/content/26ca8986-989c-4d3b-9e05-3b0f12ff7e61

They're not going to ask for payslips and tax returns but deposit/stake limits will be imposed shortly.

I've already experienced compulsory imposed limits. I received the email yesterday.

This will probably  stop me playing completely. I'm just not willing to go that far with the anal scrutiny.

I don't know where the UK will go with this, but it's yet another business industry that are strangled with compliance which focuses on telling people  they cannot play rather than the reason they are actually there.

They will be left with the 10p spin merchants, happy to win £3.25

I'm old school so I like to have total freedom to express myself, this includes the option to lose everything in an evening if I choose too, it's character building having that sort of power over your own life, if you want to be powerless go to prison. - Hackz 2021

Joking aside it's always the minority that spoil pleasurable pastimes by constantly nagging and whining to the operators, a bit like the no smoking rule in pubs, it's a place to go and get legless, who cares about a bit of smoke, it adds to the atmos, it's not supposed to be smoke free, child safe community centre is it.

Well imo that's the same for gambling, its a mans sport, an all or nothing hobby, a cowboy's favourite pastime, not something to made so safe the whole buzz is removed. Anyway, sad times, maybe it's time for me to move to Malta!

Interesting stuff

So what about land based casinos? What's next for them... bank statement needed upon entry when you want a pint and a few spins on the wheel?

Probably  have bouncers on the door. Gone are the days where ''you're not coming in with trainers''. It's you're not coming in without full sow.

This is tantamount to shutting down all online gambling. No-one is going to play a £100 a month limit and be scrutinised by unknown characters that have no right to enforce such ludicrous rules on our freedom to have fun.  Its political correctness gone mad and will certainly cause me to close all online accounts ASAP.

Instead I shall make lots of divine food and play poker ..... unless of course that also becomes silly .

You cannot physically stop someone doing their bollox in if they wanted to. Gamstop gamban self exclusion deposit limits max spin and all the rest of it wouldn’t stop the hardened gambler finding a way. There's always a way. Maybe i shouldn't say that as it may put ideas in people's heads but an example. A casino restricts a player to £200 a month 🤔 what's to stop someone having 25 accounts across 25 different sites and could potentially lose 5k a month. Surely there comes a time where people just has to take responsibility for their actions. Gamstop is enough and if a player is signed up to Gamstop and still finds a way to lose a fortune online whatever restrictions are imposed won't help that person.

Surely gamstop is enough '' protection '' - if you want to stop = gamstop........ it's not just this country now it's germany hard on regs, sweden it's just yawn lol no wonder why them fake streamers do promote crypto casinos because of harder regs I do absolutely those fake parasites $50k bonus buys etc... there are some unlicensed casinos that actually are ok the rest are like just pure evil corrupt. as I previously said - the UKGC is OVER REGULATING which will drive people to the UN REGULATED market then they've lost all control and tactics to '' protect players ''

I play on my mates party poker and poker stars. One has £40 a month limit and one has $15 a month. It's enough for me just to give me that fix as a past problem gambler of many years. Ask a person if they could pay double their mortgage every month and i bet most would say no so how can people afford to lose £500 to 1k a month if not more cos i couldn't.

As casinoland/ one click ltd did this to me lol. fuck that group

Don't get me wrong i completely agree deposit limits shouldn't be forced on a player it should be the players choice. I just think since I've dramatically calmed down over the last 2 years i probably value more than i used to. Like i said though a player will always find a way if they desire.
