Advice on a big loss

Hi all,

I've had a good look through but can't see anything similar to this and there seems to be a lot of helpful folk here so I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.

I've always liked a gamble but kept it low cost in the most part.  Over lockdown I've bee staying up late and playing slots a lot more and had a couple of good wins where I've turned £50 into £2,000 so I've been a bit more hooked.  Kept deposit limits on to stop any stupidity, but alas that has now happened as I signed up to 888 casino and didn't add a deposit limit.

Long story short, I usually deposit straight from my bank account, but had some money in my PayPal one night so deposited from there instead, then deposited through PP again but taking the money from my bank account.  I knew I didn't have much money in there, but it kept allowing me to deposit, I'd had a few beers and just thought maybe it was a mistake and kept depositing, up to about 2k it turns out.  Then a few nights later I thought I'd try it again, figuring there was nowhere that the money could be coming from and just played until it wouldn't take any more deposits, my PayPal just said "Pre-approved payment"...  I mean I knew that I shouldn't have been doing it, but it seemed like it was a bug or something and as I had no money in my account there was nothing I could lose

Then the fiancee opened her online banking, and bang, there was £12k missing.  A while back she used her card details to buy a takeaway through my PayPal, and that's why I had been allowed to continue depositing.  Now I appreciate that I've been pretty stupid thinking there would be no comeback from just depositing and thinking nothing of it, but legally do I have a leg to stand on here?  I know for a fact that I would never have authorised any payment to come from that account, and on any other site I've used, if there was no money in, then it wouldn't have taken a payment from PayPal and simply told me that I didn't have the money in there.

I've emailed 888 and they've said that they want my last 3 months bank statements, payslips and details of occupation etc. but I'm uncomfortable sending this information over, especially as the issue isn't to do with my money, it's the fact that the money has been taken from another account without consent.  I've explained this but heard nothing back from them for a week or more, does anyone have any advice on whether this is worth pursuing?

Thank you in advance, and sorry if I rambled a bit

Expensive mistake. I’d tell you your a daft bugger but you already know that. There was a thread on here almost identical to this the other day it’s a shame you can’t look back through and take some advice from it.

Yup, fully aware I've been a daft bugger, to put it mildly.

I appreciate there have been similar threads, but I'm confident that I've looked through and none of the advice relates to my specific issue. Happy to be proven wrong and apologies if I've missed something obvious

If you want the casino to help you, you should stop feeling uncomfortable and do what they ask. They probably won't help you anyway though. In terms of PayPal the account name on PayPal should match the bank account name, it is in their terms of service, the moment that account was added under someone else's name the account should have been flagged as fraudulent. So if it is as you have said your partner could possibly seek the money back from PayPal, the first step would be her contacting her bank to open a case, if successful my best guess would be the amount would be charged to your PayPal account, if you are unable to pay that amount they would either seek legal action against you or sell the debt off to a collection agency.

I wouldn't imagine that there is any scenario where you are happy. Your wrongdoings will rightfully be punished.

The only ones I could see where people who had knowingly used someone else's card as opposed to this not being authorised, but I do understand that they're similar. It's more the fact that PayPal put it as "pre-approved" that made me wonder. I'm assuming that 888 and paypal will probably blame each other but something doesn't feel right about it

If that's all they're asking for I'd say that's the least of your worries, get it sent over its standard practice for all players when you get source of wealth checked.

Regarding any other similar threads, I'll link you the other one below for a read

Wasn’t this hidden mate? Just in case @Quicksave1 asked to have it taken down.

Apologies then if that was up and I missed it. I did do a search for similar issues and couldn't see anything, my bad.

I'm guessing that iit's pretty much as I was fearing and I'm just gonna have to suck it up. I should just count my blessings that the (undoubtedly now!) better half hasn't kicked me out and is happy with me paying her back

Guess I'll put it down to one of life's expensive lessons. Appreciate the fast responses

If you hadn’t already acknowledged the deposits with 888 you could’ve possibly been a bit naughty and got your fiancée to charge the payments back, claiming it was fraud and she had no knowledge of it. I assume you’re not married yet so you won’t have the same surname.

Now you’ve acknowledged it I don’t really know what to accept. You clearly have no control and need Gamstop urgently.

I would suggest reading the previous threads suggested by other members. Also I would add I agree with @Chair Slots that gamstop should be a priority if you are gambling that amount of money which you do not have. Hopefully things work out for you. Lots of good advice available here.

Nah it was hidden by Jokester till I got to see it and I've now decided I think it should be left up, especially as the same topic has reared it's head again in a matter of days

The worrying thing is that this weird thing that allows gamblers to deposit via PayPal more than they have in the bank

For that reason I don’t think it should be visible. Then again if you want to gamble that bad you will find a way

Anyone that far gone is beyond help mate and hopefully that is a miniscule percent of society and it can help the majority that search for it, as the OP said he searched and couldn't find anything, sometimes just a anon post online can be enough to help someone from doing something daft so I'm leaving it up for now.

The only way there is any hope of the money being returned is of your girlfriend opens a fraud case. Even then it could be difficult because she willingly added her card details to your pay pal.

The only way you could get the casino is on affordability, how you've been allowed to deposit 12k without there being any checks is beyond me. Clearly you would not be able to prove you could afford that and some responsibility lies with the casino.

Reading this thread and the one from the other day there seems to be some glaring issues with pay pal tbh and some massive holes in their set up.

PayPal is open to massive abuse and ways round certain deposit methods when it comes to gambling. I won’t go into them as I don’t want to encourage anybody desperate but the UKGC or whoever need to block this as a payment method until it’s fixed.

Somebody with zero money and or bankrupt could easily deposit thousands with PayPal using various different ways. Now some I guess have or try to take advantage of this and the desperate ones will get into an even bigger mess.

Expensive lesson mate, as big bucks said how in this day and age they let you deposit that much with no checks is disgusting.

Yes I agree, the scenario last week involved @Quicksave1 using a Peter to Paul scenario where funds could be instantly created with PayPals two day clearing system allowing money to be created from thin air, this scenario basically involves this fellas fiancée bank account  being linked to his PayPal account allowing access to a five figure sum.

I argue that @Quicksave1 original thread be taken down as it puts instant liquidity into problem gamblers minds.

It doesn’t really change much. If you gamble with money that isn’t yours you have to pay it back. Only difference with the PayPal thing you have the inconvenience of letters, phone calls and failed doorman knocking on your door.

Paypal definitely has to have a look at it though. Don’t understand it from a business perspective as a good portion will surely be written off or they will accept an offer on the debt...
