William Hill Closes 700 Betting Shops Due to FOBT Stake Cut

In an update published on its website, the leading UK bookmaker William Hill announced that it “has entered into a consultation process with retail colleagues” and it may close up to 700 of its betting shops within the next few months. The reason for the closure is the drastic decrease of the FOBTs max stake introduced earlier in 2019. William Hill is yet to reveal the exact locations of the shops slated for closure, but the shutdown is expected no later than the end of the year.

This was announced in January  .  Hardly "not public knowledge"

Well Phillip. That is bad journalism as it was strewn with errors. As previously stated all information about shop closures prior to this last month or so has been based on speculation and the bookmakers forecasted figures from the consultation period. But I have explained this to you before and it went over your head, I do believe venomously in the old adage of "if you throw enough shit at a wall eventually some will stick". But you seem rather adamant on ignoring the obvious.

Exactly but I’m afraid hackz saw nothing wrong with it . Paul doesn’t do any sort of heavy advertising on here so why should others get away with it , especially when it’s so underhanded

people only used to bet on horses and dogs and before the days of Betfair the overrounds were a lot higher

They all got greedy on the FOBT income and killed the golden goose with nothing but utter GREED

If they took a smaller slice of the pie things might not be as dramatic, the biggest addicts are the bookmakers themselves, not wanting SOME but wanting IT ALL!

GREED took them up and GREED took them down.

Yeh agree

I still remember the days when the bookies didn't have any TV's and they all opened at 10:00am and were all closed half an hour after the last race, night racing didn't exist and they were also closed on good Friday.

Sure we have all witnessed big changes over the years but those machines really do take the piss 99% of the time and have ruined many lives, I do enjoy the odd game from time to time but like many of us I've watched people sit and blow everything on them including a few mates of mine.

I'd not lose a bit of sleep if they removed the lot of them.

Every form of gambling ruins lives. From loot boxes within computer games, to scratch cards, sports betting, greyhound betting, horse betting, the national lottery, the local bingo hall, arcades, online casino's and so on and so on. Its not something exclusive to just the FOBTs.

True BUT most things can be social

Going to the races or bingo can be very social for a lot of people, nothing social about someone sitting playing a fobt
