Basically all they have done is open shit loads of more shops over the years maximising there profits whilst hitting the poorest the hardest. 1

Blacko
Bittersweet. Euphoric about the FOBts being transformed into flashing paperweights but also saddened that peoples jobs are being taken away from them. The £100 spins on the FOBts should never have been allowed from the start. It takes several suicides before the government admit that these fucking things were causing major problems in every city and village in Britain. 1
Miller26
Like all three of you have said they should of never been allowed to be so easily available. And as for the jobs the vast majority are minimum wage so it’s no biggie as there’s loads of them jobs about.

I know there are other jobs out there but now they will have the stress of trying to find another. Also will hills is not going to be the only 1 closing shops they are just the start and I expect the other so called leading bookmakers to follow suit shortly. Kev40
Never mind such a shame eh. I'm sure someone will come on about the job losses and more people moving to online gambling but sorry if i have little sympathy. They knew what they were doing all along. The government did fuck all for years happily accepting millions in corporation tax each year and when they did finally do something they dragged it out for as long as possible before the laws were changed and max stake was reduced.
Rocknrolla
I obviously have no sympathy really for the bookmakers as they got greedy, all they had to do was implement better protective measures and they could have still had the £50 or even £100 spins. But I do feel for the staff, when I used to frequently visit the bookies most of them were sound and even gamblers themselves, I hope they at least get some sort of redundancy package
Player1173
As others have said its bitter sweet. Of course hearing so many people losing their jobs is not good, although this is hardly a surprise. i have a question generally, why do people go into bookies in the first place when you have everything you need to place bets on literally anything online? I've only been in a bookies a handful of times in my life before the days of smartphones. Is it for social purposes? Punters that are old school and dont have access or abilty to use online platforms? I've never really got my head around the need for so many bookies or why people go in them tbh, you cant even get a pint in one!
h0tsh0t87
Fobt should be allowed in shop but the spins on roulette capped at £10 and slots £2. The most I spent in the bookies in one go is 400-500 in a few hours. Online I on multiple times lost thousands on one spin.?? Banning Fobt isn't the answer it is just making people go online and spend more money

Its a good question and maybe they will die out a bit because of online. When I used to go (before fobt days) it was to have a punt on the horses, dogs, maybe do a football yankee or accumulator and either watch it all in there if some of the old characters were about or go down the pub and watch the scores. So for me around then it was definitely more of a social thing and fight over the racing post!

Round by me the majority of people in the bookies are of the older generation it’s what they have done all there life and probably have no clue how to work a computer/smartphone. To some it is a social thing aswell I should imagine.

Banning Fobt isn't the answer it is just making people go online and spend more money I think some people will definitely go to online and even the land based casinos because of it but I would say the protection online (apart from the rogue casinos/licenses) is getting close to as good as it can be. I still think online could still do more but its a million times better than a couple of years ago
Guest
My thoughts are it is sad for the staff but I am glad that they are closing so many. I would rather if I was a member of staff have the stress as an individual to look for a job and many many punters being saved from suicide, self harm, loss of property, jobs and debt. The misery caused is outrageous and the time taken to put in preventative measures cost lives and causes me deep unrest
VillaLad
The best thing that happened with the fobt’s was that they was limited to only having 4 in each shop. But the bookies got around that by opening multiple shops on the same high street. Without the limit I think bookies wouldn’t be as we know them now they would have been full with fobt’s and open 24 hours.
Douvan
This was on the news about a month ago, nothing much really be said since. They said Ladbrokes are closing some down as well. Good riddance I say.

I believe the government were getting over 800 million in duty on the slots that is why the treasury were not too keen on reducing fobt. I believe in the uk the figure of expected closures is over 3000 shops . One rep said that each shop pays around 30k a year in media rights so that is 90 million in lost income for media rights which means that racings financial future is very much in jeopardy. Lord knows what will happen if Sheik Mohammad does not like the UK sheltering Princess Haya and withdraws his horses

I also admit that my slot gambling became cocaine style when I found online casinos. I lost the value of money and my addiction grew ever more secret. This was after the introduction of FOBT's. I still recall the day I saw one and it frightened me because I knew it would cause me harm but it did not stop me. It cost me more than money

Gambling is everywhere in the uk. You can't get away from it. It's massively out of hand. Tv radio online high street sporting events sponsorship. Everywhere you look it's in your face. It's ridiculous. I'd go as far to say it's worse than when tobacco advertising was allowed.

I know the buck always stops at me but it’s there . There’s a few really good staff still in the bookies but I’m afraid the vast majority know absolutely naff all and are totally not interested in the job .

Never ever did i see a member of staff refuse a customer playing a fobt.

It’s not the people behind the counter who put the fobt’s there mate. Many years ago I used to play them a lot and I do remember the girl behind the counter say to me don’t you think you should calm down on that they are no good for you. And it worked I stopped playing them
