Two questions about losses.

Recommended Posts

I have two questions I'd like to canvas some opinion on regarding losses.

Q1

Suppose you had been paid your monthly salary and went out and blew 25% of that in a four hour casino session. Does that sound degen?

E.g. your take-home was £1000 and you blew £250 leaving you with £750.

Q2

Suppose your take home pay was £10,000 and you blew £2500 - does that put a different perspective on the question and sound any more or less degen?

I have my thoughts on this but I'll chip them in later so as not to bias any responses.

What do you think TGC?

Q1  is the biggest because it is likely to be a huge percentage of your disposable income.   ie person one is more at risk of not being able to pay there bills

personally I don't think there is any difference. Expenditure is all relative to earnings.

I agree. With £7500 left you probably dont have 10times the bills against the £750 left so a big difference I guess.

Yeh I would agree with this in relation to the question

Without doubt it hurts when a person loses a large part of a small wage packet much more , because even though the figures are relative , a person earning a large salary has already paid for much of the months basic needs with just 25% of the wage....so the poorer man suffers because he exposes himself to losing not just money but the inability to pay basic bills.  His take home at 1500.00 having lost 300 then means no food , once the mortgage or rent is paid.....the richer gambler has no such problem , income 3600 rent /mortgage 1500 ,  loss 1000 , still has 1100 left for bills and food ..... no problem.

So although it looks like a relative amount is the same type of effect in loss , it is not the same effect in meeting bills etc....thus feels worse .....

In terms of being degenerate  both amounts are not degenerate . Degenerate loses everything ...... and leaves nothing .... no reason applied .

I would add that a degenerate gambler does not see the amount and separate the need and the bills first, but would simply whack the whole amount online minutes after being paid and begin to try to win a fortune. No account is taken of the money until it is lost - or a substantial amount withdrawn --- but then that substantial amount would also be back online within minutes of hitting the account to try and win more, regardless of waiting bills.  Its a kaleidoscope of greed and opportunity to try and change your life in one go, never realising that the casino  has already taken away the possibility of the big win by introducing variables that extend the payout time of RTP to the infinite day.....

A degenerate gambler s only happy when he has lost all his money and can finally relax because then reason enters and he sees the foolishness and stupidity , until he is paid again and repeats the mistake.

There are many a true words in that post.

I agree the scenario I laid out isn't degenerative when put into perspective.
